Does AI repeat the Enlightenment's reversal into its opposite?

Exploring whether AI's design as a cognitive liberation tool structurally produces epistemic regression rather than progress. The inquiry draws on Adorno and Horkheimer's theory that reason contains seeds of its own mythologization.

The central thesis of Adorno and Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944) is that the Enlightenment project — the liberation of humanity through reason and science — contains within itself the seeds of its own reversal. Reason, which set out to demystify myth, becomes mythological itself. Technology, which promised freedom from nature, becomes a new tyranny. The instrument of liberation becomes the instrument of domination. The pattern is dialectical: liberation produces the conditions for new unfreedom precisely by succeeding at its original goal.

AI is this dialectic operating on cognition. The technology was built to augment human knowledge — to make us smarter, faster, better-informed, freer from cognitive limitation. As it succeeds at this goal, it produces a new condition: AI-generated knowledge, by being generated rather than authored, returns the knowledge economy to a form of ungrounded fluency that resembles pre-Enlightenment hearsay. The technology that promised to complete the Enlightenment project (all knowledge accessible to all people) reverses into its opposite: all "knowledge" generated for all people, none of it reliably grounded.

The dialectical structure matters because it rules out two common framings. The first is technological optimism: "AI is good; misuse is the problem." The dialectical reading rejects this — the regression is not misuse, it is the structural consequence of the technology working as designed. The second is technological pessimism: "AI is bad and should be stopped." The dialectical reading rejects this too — the technology emerges from real Enlightenment achievements (scientific reasoning, computational power, large-scale collaboration) that cannot be wished away. The dialectical reading is harder than either: the technology is what Enlightenment becomes, and what it becomes contains the regression as a constitutive moment.

This has practical consequences. Adorno and Horkheimer's prescription for the original dialectic was sustained critical reason — not opposing the Enlightenment but extending its self-critique to the new mythologies it produces. The AI-era prescription is analogous: sustained critique of AI's specific epistemic failures, conducted by humans who continue to do the verification work AI cannot do. The Knowledge Custodian role is one operationalization. AI knowledge is structurally hearsay — ungrounded, modified in every retelling, unverifiable against any stable source specifies what the regression amounts to. The strongest counterargument: AI may eventually exceed the dialectic by self-correcting (verifying its own outputs, citing real sources, refusing to fabricate). Possible, but the dialectical reading expects each such self-correction to produce its own reversal — verification mechanisms become themselves AI-generated and subject to the same circularity (Can we still verify AI knowledge if verification itself is AI-generated?).
